Namer armored personnel carriers
The Israeli heavy armored personnel carrier Namer received an active protection system for Trophy tanks, called by the military "Windbreaker". According to Defense News, the vehicle has already begun a series of tests, after which the Israeli Ministry of Defense may decide to serially install the system on all Namer armored personnel carriers of the new production.
Initially, the Namer armored personnel carriers were planned to be equipped with the Iron Fist active protection system, developed by Israel Military Industries. It has already been tested, but several contractors involved in the project to install the system on the Namer failed to establish cooperation, and the Israeli Ministry of Defense decided to start testing the Trophy.
The Trophy active tank protection was developed in the first half of the 2000s. It is designed to protect against anti-tank missiles. The protection includes a radar station, a computer and two launchers with an automatic loading system. Such a system is installed on the main battle tanks Merkava IV, on the basis of which the Namer armored personnel carriers were developed.
After the radar detects the incoming ammunition, the computer calculates its trajectory and issues the command to the launchers. They shoot several metal balls, which destroy the rocket or grenade on the way. Today Trophy is the only active tank defense system in the world, adopted for service and used in combat.
