Combat laser on artillery installation MLG 27
The German company Rheinmetall conducted ship tests of a high-energy combat laser with a capacity of ten kilowatts. According to Defense Aerospace, during the tests, the ship was on the high seas. The purpose of the checks was to assess the effectiveness of the combat laser at sea.
At the time of testing, the unit with a combat laser was mounted on an MLG 27 shipborne artillery mount of 27 mm caliber. During the check, no laser shots were fired, it only accompanied unmanned aerial vehicles, small boats, as well as ground stationary targets.
Rheinmetall has been developing a combat laser since the late 2000s. The installation with a capacity of ten kilowatts in previous tests was used to track and destroy unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as to fire at moving and stationary ground targets.
In addition to the ten-kilowatt laser, Rheinmetall is developing a one-kilowatt combat laser. These weapons are supposed to be mounted on armored vehicles and used for clearing roads from improvised explosive devices and disposing of unexploded ordnance.
