Representatives of Google have demonstrated the latest version of the prototype of the modular smartphone Ara and called the release date of the smartphone. The developer version will be available for purchase in the fall of 2016, with serial production scheduled for 2017. Representatives of the company announced this at the I / O 2016 conference.
The new prototype of a modular smartphone implies fewer modules for possible replacement. In particular, the front panel with a 5, 3-inch screen is no longer a module and the user cannot change it by himself. Six modules are attached to the back of the Ara with electromagnetic latches and are removed after a voice command via Google Now - for example, after the phrase "Ok, Google, eject the camera" the phone allows you to replace the module with the camera. In this case, the change of modules occurs without the need to turn off the smartphone.
The surface of the modules is made of different materials and in different colors. Google and third-party developers are expected to release new modules in the future, but the following components are currently available for rear panel installation:
- E-ink display for notifications or permanent display of important information
- Different camera modules with different lenses and sensors
- Additional audio modules with speakers or microphones
- Step
- Replaceable battery
- Programmable touch module
- The fingerprint scanner
- Decorative cap

A working prototype of Project Ara was first demonstrated at the I / O 2015 conference and featured a module layout and fastening mechanism. Also, a replaceable screen was originally planned, but later the developers abandoned this idea.
Earlier, LG introduced the G5 smartphone with replaceable modules, but due to the specific design of the modules and the lack of a duplicate battery in the phone case, the device turns off when the modules are replaced.
