Fiona O'Leary from the Royal College of Art in London has developed a device that allows you to use parameters of objects from the physical world to decorate text and images on a computer. For example, the gadget can recognize and apply the typeface of typed text, Wired notes, calling the device "Shazam for flowers" and "pokeball for fonts."
A tool called Spector uses a built-in camera to photograph objects and, depending on the selected mode, allows you to determine the size and name of the headset or the color of the surface in CMYK, RGB and Pantone. The device transmits information via Bluetooth to a computer, on which, using plug-ins, you can use the received data in InDesign, Pages or Word.
The colors are added to the program palette, and the font from the recognized typeface is applied to the selected text. In addition, headset data includes size (up to and including 48) and kerning, as well as the name and information about where it can be purchased. Without a Bluetooth connection, the instrument stores data for the last 20 headsets.
The tool shown in the video is a working prototype that so far only supports recognition of seven headsets, but the author is working on connecting the device to a large headset base. O'Leary is interested in the commercial development of the project, no dates for the possible mass production of the gadget or the estimated price have been reported.
