We are all accustomed to living in a world where the sky is above, the earth is below, the grass is green, and snails hide in a shell in case of danger. But it turns out that the world is not always as simple as we would like, and some snails believe that the best defense is offense.

Russian and Japanese scientists observed the behavior of representatives of two gastropod species, Karaftohelix gainesi and Karaftohelix selskii. These snails not only do not hide in the shell when danger approaches, but, on the contrary, begin to wave aggressively at it, trying to hit the attacker. By the way, after analyzing the DNA, scientists discovered an interesting feature - in both species, a similar active defense mechanism appeared independently, and among the closest related species it is still customary to hide in a shell.

After conducting various measurements, the researchers found a relationship between the parameters of the shell and the defense mechanism - the shells of "aggressive" snails are larger in size and have a relatively large entrance opening, which allows them to develop the muscles necessary for swinging with such a "club". The shells of snails hiding from predators are smaller in size, like the entrance hole - so that the enemy cannot get through it to the body of the mollusk.

In general, it is dangerous to offend snails, some of them will offend whoever you want.
