The book “That's for sure. The Devil's Dozen Science Comics and Scientists”(Eksmo Publishing House) is a collection of stories from the world of science, the plots of which are based on real research published in scientific journals. The Organizing Committee of the Enlightener Prize included this book in a “long list” of 25 books, among which the finalists and laureates of the Prize will be selected. N + 1 invites its readers to familiarize themselves with the comic strip drawn by Anastasia Zhdanova based on the script by Daria Vyaltseva. A story called Mustard and Big Data explores how machine learning is helping to investigate the impact of fertilizer on soil and biome - and shows what happens when the effect of fertilizer gets out of hand.

Mustard and Big Data
The analysis of large data sets using machine learning is used today in various fields: in the Internet environment (mainly for advertising purposes), economics, banking and even sports. One of the most visible trends is the use of machine learning technologies in agriculture.
The soil for researchers and programmers is a subject no less interesting than the creation of algorithms for successful advertising promotion. After all, the earth is only at first glance an ordinary layer of land, in fact it is a complex ecosystem with its own laws and many parameters: porosity, relief, biological characteristics and microelement composition.
Comparing and analyzing all these indicators, scientists are developing models for increasing soil fertility, as well as studying the acceptable concentration of fertilizers and their impact on the environment and soil microorganisms. This is a cartoon story about phosphogypsum - a fertilizer that is produced and used commercially - and what happens when its effects get out of hand.
