Ocean yacht "Barkas Cleopatra"
The treasures of the Hawaiian King Kamehameha II sunk two centuries ago will be exhibited in the museum of the island of Kauai. It is reported by a source from The Associated Press.
Scientists at the Smithsonian Institution, led by Richard Rogers, discovered the crash site in 1995, and excavations continued until 2001. The ship and its artifacts belonged to the Hawaiian king Kamehameha II (Likholiho). Among the items found were gold, silver, mortars for making poi, precious stones, a ship's whistle, knives, forks, mica and paraphernalia of different peoples of the world.
Kamehameha II purchased a ship called Cleopatra's Barque from George Croninshild II in 1816. According to Kauai Museum Specialist Zenon Wong, Cleopatra's Barque was the first ocean-going yacht built in the United States. The vessel was renamed Hawaiian Pride.
According to documents, on April 6, 1824, the entire crew, with the exception of the captain, was intoxicated when the ship stumbled upon the reefs. King Kamehameha II was at this time in Great Britain on a visit to King George IV.
