The robot prints the road on the moon
NASA has announced a tender for the development of a printable dwelling and related technologies that will be used in the future in the development of other planets, including Mars. In total, it is planned to spend $ 2.25 million on holding the competition, which takes place in several stages.
The first stage of the competition, which started on May 16, 2015, will run until September 27 inclusive. Participants will be required to submit architectural concept designs for buildings that can be 3D printed using local materials. During the construction of dwellings, parts of the devices that delivered the 3D printer to another planet can also be used.
NASA plans to accept no more than 30 concept projects for consideration. The winner will receive a prize of $ 50,000. The second stage of the tender will start on September 26, divided into two sub-stages. The first involves the creation of devices that will use various types of 3D printing to construct buildings from local materials.
In the second substage, participants will have to build a dwelling from local materials according to the winning project. The finalists of each sub-stage will receive $ 1.1 million. In the future, NASA plans to send new construction machines to different planets, where they will print houses for future settlers.
The tender is being held as part of a larger NASA program for the development of other planets. The agency believes that the construction of dwellings and auxiliary buildings on other planets will be cheaper than the delivery of construction materials and equipment to them.
